Guitar Amps – For Your “Plugged” Performance

In the last few years, there’s been a respectable surge in the prevalence of “unplugged” performances. Such displays, as you may assume from the name, attribute artists in small places performing acoustically for smaller audiences. 1 interesting element to these performances is that occasionally the artists perform on electric guitars without even using amplifiers. The irony, of course, is that electric guitars were specifically designed to be able to use amplifiers so that the music may be heard.

We appear to have come full circle. An amazing performance, I’d hypothesize, is an effort by both the artist and the viewer to “get back to the songs.” And there is certainly nothing wrong with this. However, the reason both the site and the crowd are modest would be that if they weren’t, nobody will be able to hear anything. The simple fact remains that electric guitars are designed to be used with amplifiers. If they are not, it’s quite tricky to hear what’s being played since (many) electric guitar figures are strong, as opposed to hollow just like that of an acoustic instrument. So while unplugged performances might have artistic merit, they don’t create use of a few of those electric guitar’s most powerful and significant assets: the amplifier.

This eventually led to the incorporation of preamplifier distortion controllers, which nearly accommodate guitar amplifiers as musical instruments within their rights. Surely it is now impossible to imagine modern audio with no usage of those devices.
